The Online Trap
Rajesh Mehta lived in Navi Mumbai. He was a retired engineer and had saved a lot of money over the years. One day, he joined a group online that talked about making big money through share trading. The group looked real, and the people spoke like experts. They promised Rajesh that he would earn huge profits.
At first, Rajesh invested a small amount. He was shown that his money was growing fast. Trusting them more and more, he kept investing. Between January and August 2024, Rajesh gave them nearly ₹14.88 crore. But one day, the website stopped working. The people he spoke to vanished. That’s when he realized he had been cheated.
Rajesh went to the police. The cyber crime team started looking into the case. They followed clues using technology and intelligence reports. Soon, they found a suspect — a man named Amit Singh from Khagaria, Bihar.
The police arrested Amit and brought him to Navi Mumbai. During questioning, Amit told them the whole truth. He said he had worked in Cambodia from June 2023 to June 2024. There, he worked in fake call centers. These centers tricked Indians into giving money by pretending to be share market experts.
The websites and apps they used were fake. They showed fake profits to fool people into investing more money. Rajesh was not the only victim — many others were cheated the same way.
The police now know that this is part of a bigger international scam. They are still working to catch more people involved.
